Stepping into Spring - The Footwear Round-Up
Haven't you heard, ugly is the new pretty. It's not chic to be polished anymore, rather the more extravagant and the more 'anti-fashion' you are, the more fashion you are. Don't worry, that statement confuses the best of us. But in rounding up the best of SS18 shows thus far, the ugly trend seems to be sticking for yet another year.
Sparking debate, the debut of crocs on the runway remained a hot topic throughout the year. First seen in Christopher Kane's SS17 show, the divisive pieces showed up again in Balenciaga’s AW17 show and were prominently sold out before their release date. Hopping on this bandwagon, Y/Project adopted another anti-fashion piece, Uggs, in a thigh high form. Some have turned a blind eye, while others are adopting the controversial footwear option.
For those that aren't ready for the reception of crocs and Uggs, trainers remain a lasting fixture to the catwalk. SS18 focused on the bigger the better slogan with shoes showing extended platforms, decorative designs and hybrid footwear. Marc Jacobs showed up with fur-trimmed high-tops, Louis Vuitton countered with sci-fi springy shoes, while Prada came around with high-performance velcro shoes. It's no longer about the head-to-toe scan down, this season it's feet first.
